About The Event

Date & time: Saturday 4 November at 13:00

Place: Hall of the St Swithun's Preparatory (Junior) School, Alresford Road, Winchester SO21 1HA

In 2028, the 150th anniversary of the opening of St Giles Hill Park will be time to celebrate the great community asset we have today.  As the sesquicentennial looms, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate the Park's past and get it into shape for the future.

Join us on the afternoon of 4 November 2023 to be part of the start of the journey to 2028 and see where you might participate, however minimally as every little helps. Using the history of the Park as uncovered so far to provide context, we will be able to see what needs to be done in the following years.

The list of activities is quite varied and on top of the more obvious activities of working parties and historical research, the collection of oral history, current usage information and fundraising are important activities.  So too are the more detailed activities of surveying what is present and what could be. Think accessibility, seats, signage, graffiti, views, routes, flora, fauna, photography, art and so on. On top of this, administrators, communicators and IT folk are needed. It would be good to to have a more diverse team of Trustees, too!

At this kick off meeting we would aim to plan an event for one evening in the first half of 2024 to present a Past, Present and Future of the Park to a wide audience to lay out more specific plans, especially of projects and fundraising.

By courtesy of St Swithun’s School, a school very much linked with St Giles Hill, we are to hold a meeting to prepare for this Anniversary in the Hall of the Prep (Junior) School starting at 13.00 on Saturday 4 November. Booking is preferred to enable tea and coffee refreshment numbers. The Hall will be our venue for the Past, Present and Future event next year and though we will rattle in it for the November event it will give us the opportunity to think about how we use it to best effect for the 2024 event.

Please join us to learn more, especially of the fascinating history, to be present at the start of the journey and offer support moral or practical. Summer 2028 begins to loom and the time is ripe to get moving towards a Park to be proud of.
