About The Event
A great opportunity to help us unearth the history of St Giles Hill Park, and discover the Hampshire Record Office.
For two days in February -- 2nd and 27th of the month -- Park Friends chair Harry Mycock will be at Hampshire Records Office, which is near Winchester Railway Station, working through the Archives to learn more about the creation and development of the Park, as well as the rich history of the site prior to the Park's establishment.
If the Archives are new to you Harry will be pleased to introduce you to the Archives and how they operate as well as spend time working through material that may help in the quest. Spend an hour as a taster or as long as you want for the day to see what might be found in the rich seam of the Archives. No commitment is necessary but if you would like to become more involved in research over the coming months that would be great.
Just turn up on the day and meet at 10am in the Foyer of the HRO. Feel free to bring a flask and refreshments. It is fine to eat at the tables in the foyer. There are cafes not far away too, with an excellent independent coffee shop, Røst, nearby on Stockbridge Road.
Paper and pencils are useful (pens are not allowed in the search room). Phones are useful, though need to be on silent. Lockers are available for bags, clothes, food and drink etc.
A Day Ticket may be issued but if you think you might like to visit the HRO or many other Archives around the country then you may obtain, free of charge, an Archives card valid for 5 years. You can fill out all you need on line in advance or do this on the day though you’ll need 2 forms of ID (one with a photo ID such as passport or driving licence and one with a proof of address such as a utility bill or a recent bank, credit card or council tax bill in your name).
