About The Event

Join us on Sunday 31 May 2026 for a special open-air talk on St Giles Hill marking 950 years to the day since the execution of Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria — the last great Anglo-Saxon earl to be executed by William the Conqueror.


Standing at the site of the execution above Winchester, we will use the vantage point of St Giles Hill to consider:


  • Saxon Winchester as in 1066

  • The Norman impact on Winchester

  • Waltheof’s execution in 1076 as part of the story of the Saxon to Norman change

  • What might have been
